At the Joe Gear Companies we have known for 57 years that remanufactured vehicle components are better than new. The combination of quality and cost savings (40% savings compared to new components on average) makes reman units an excellent option for today’s modern fleet. The US Government is catching on. They are beginning to study and understand the benefits of remanufacturing. On February 11, 2014, Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) introduced the “Federal Vehicle Repair Cost Savings Act of 2014” (H.R. 4056). This bill would require federal agencies to encourage the use of remanufactured vehicle components to maintain the federal fleet of civilian vehicles. This mandate would not be required if using such parts would reduce the quality of vehicle performance, delay the return to service of a vehicle, or not reduce costs. The bill was referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
The Act touts the benefits of reman equipment being a combination of environmental, economic, and performance. With the increased development of Class 6-8 powertrain systems that have to comply with new emissions regulations will continue to increase the demand and economic viability of reman components in North America. You should expect to see more partnerships between the aftermarket remanufacturing companies and the OEM’s as this opportunity continues to grow.
